‘You never said it was like this’. This was our son-in-law’s first comment as he got out of the car at Clover Cliff for the first time.  It is indeed quite amazing to find a property in such a spectacular location and available for families to spend holidays surrounded by the stunning beauty of the Gower Coast  AONB  totally away from noisy traffic and the pressures of modern life.

Clover Cliff is a gem of a cottage that overlooks the sea and some of the most dramatic coastline in the ‘Gower Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ if not the British Isles.  Situated within three hundred yards of the coast of the Bristol Channel amid the cliff top fields of Great Pitton Farm, it can be found in Google Earth at 51 deg. 33’ 34.23”N and 4 deg. 16’ 24.24”W. Whether you like walking, painting, bird watching, surfing, climbing, paragliding, or want a great location for a family holiday this is an outstanding place within 10 minutes walk of Mewslade Bay. It is also within a mile and a half of Rhossili which boasts three miles of sandy beach. For peace, quiet and somewhere to relax and watch the changes in light and weather, it often seems unbeatable. Other natural and historic wonders of The Gower are within easy reach by car or bike. You could also venture further to Swansea with its shops, or to the National Botanic Garden of Wales, or the historic castles of Kidwelly, Weobley and Penrice.

About the cottage

The Lucas Family have managed Clover Cliff since 2008 when Ollie and Liz took it over from Ollie’s cousin, Patrick and the Robin family.  It has been a labour of love as we have made significant improvements fitting double glazing, bringing toilet access indoors (yes indoors!), a new kitchen, new bathroom and hot water system and new storage heaters. The roof has also been renewed and insulated for cosy winter weeks beside the log burner (logs provided!) and the parking area in the field is surfaced to help with access which was sometimes a challenge in wet weather in the past. We aim to provide something that is practical and comfortable but which lets the natural surroundings speak for themselves. We prefer to use cotton bedding and provide basic cleaning materials as well as logs and kindling for the wood burner. There is a good selection of informative books as well as many favourite family games and toys for small people, a DAB radio to get the weather forecast and a CD player with a collection of classical music. The kitchen has been described as well equipped and the large windows in the kitchen, sitting room and ‘sea bedroom’ afford spectacular views of the sea and Gower Coast along with passing wildlife and farm livestock in the surrounding fields.

Working on this has brought us into contact with such friendly and supportive local people and neighbours.  We aim to always be available on the end of a phone and have great people who look after the house and grounds in our absence.

The house was built by Ollie’s grandparents to give their children close contact with the natural world away from the noise and pollution of London.  They were passionate about Gower and were involved in the beginnings of the Gower Society and in the campaign to have it made an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Ollie’s mother was staying at Clover Cliff when he was born and the small murals painted on the plaster of the sitting room were done by his grandfather, mother and aunts.  He felt the place was in his bones and although he only lived there a short time, loved wandering the cliffs and beaches on holiday as a boy.  Now it is not only our business project and family’s holiday home but also an inspiration for artists like Ollie.

Sadly, Ollie died unexpectedly in 2015 but his wife, Liz and their children and grand-children continue to enjoy all the activities that Clover Cliff and the Gower has to offer and continue to enable others to do the same.

Family favourites

Fantastic sea views, seclusion, slowing down, chilling out, contemplating the changing light and sea, watching birds, sharing our love of the natural outdoors with our children and grandchildren without having to get in a car first. Walking to Mewslade beach, surfing and making sandcastles, barbecues on the shingle at Ramsgrove and walking our dog, Ernie.  Finding a secret place to sit alone on the cliffs to watch the choughs and porpoises. Walking to Hill End near Llangennith for lunch over Rhossili Down and back along Rhossili beach. The walk to the end of The Worm when the tide is right. Listening to winter storms outside beside the cosy wood burner. Friendly neighbours.  Drawing in Mewslade valley (and just about everywhere else!) Having family time with no screens.  Curling up with a good book on winter evenings. Teaching the kids how to play Monopoly. Sitting in bed and watching the light change over The Worm as the sun comes up in the morning.

Evening meals or a BBQ and wine looking at the sunset.

Chasing rabbits – I never caught one (Ernie the dog).

We look forward to sharing our holiday home with you.

Clover Cliff Reviews

What a stunningly beautiful location. It has the atmosphere of a well loved home. The lack of TV/internet has been good for us as a family and just looking out of the window has a restorative effect – most relaxing holiday in a long time.

Julia and Ian

A much needed week of relaxation to recover from the chaos of the real world. Clover Cliff was the perfect antidote. Lazy walks directly from the cottage and cosy evenings by the fire playing ‘Trivial Pursuit’ and ‘What’s in the bag’ made for hilarious interludes with the occasional beer or whisky to add to the fun. Thank you so much Liz. There is a fantastic spirit to Clover Cliff. We had a wonderful adventure and will return.

We both enjoyed staying here in this little oasis of peace. The cottage is very well equipped and we loved its character and reading about its history in some of the many books on Gower provided.

Phil and Tania

One of the most beautiful places we have stayed. We especially enjoyed watching the l8ight change over the long lazy evenings. The library, kid’s stuff upstairs and the well equipped kitchen was much appreciated.

The Stocker family

This place has every ingredient for our perfect holiday!! Absolutely spot on – don’t change anything. The kids had a ball! Thank you.

The Jenkins family

Fantastic location. Lovely to just sit in the garden and take in the views. The walk along Mewslade Bay is lovely when the tide is out. The dogs (Snowy and Mozzy) thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Fantastic sunsets.

Morley and Miller

A few glorious days at the start of the week then much cooler. The highlight was swimming at Mewslade with the beach to ourselves then climbing the rocks round to Fall Bay. The wild flowers were beautiful especially at Whitford Point. The dogs had a great time. Brian had his bike and went to the campsite shop for his newspaper a few times. Feeling relaxed and fitter!

The Bullen family

Enjoyed everything about the cottage and Gower. Seeing the choughs was a highlight. Be sure to treat yourself to a dip in the natural infinity pool ( at the bottom of the cliff below the cottage) – just exhilarating at high tide when you get the full effect – swim wear optional!
